Propane Leak Detectors - Important Details to Know!
Fact: Propane cylinders or tanks, not matter what size or dimension, no matter if used for a forklift, a buffer, a boat, gas range, gas grill or any other propane gas appliance,..... can leak. Of equal importance is the gas line system with its many connections can leak over time.
Fact: Propane is heavier than air which causes leaking propane to settle in any nearby "low spaces" which could mean: 1) on the floor if the leak occurs in a building or 2) in a hole or ditch if the leak occurred under a house or 3) if propane is used in a marine application, a propane leak could settle in any low spot in the boat hull or available cavities.
Regarding Propane Detectors: While very useful as an early warning device, they only alert you to propane concentration at the detector which underscores the importance of proper placement and installation. Don't rely entirely on your detector! Never ignore your nose! If you smell propane, investigate the source and repair. Additionally, periodic safety inspections of your entire gas system is a best practice and should be followed.
