Painting a Propane Tank - Not as Simple as You Might Think!
- Don't use house paint to paint a propane tank or propane cylinder.
- Expansion of the steel from temperature changes will cause the paint to peel.
- Clean the tank well. Remove any rust, dirt or oils from the surface.
- Use a good primer suitable for steel applications.
- Use only paints that are suitable for steel and can withstand normal expansion.
- Paint only with colors that will deflect portions of the suns rays.
- Dark colors will absorb heat from the sun and could cause a higher than desired internal tank pressure.
