Can Propane Quality Degrade and Turn Bad?
The simple answer is NO! Propane manufactured in the United States is sold in three grades but only one grade (HD5) is sold for residential and business applications. This grade of propane can be store indefinitely in a propane tank or propane cylinder safely and without fear of it turning bad like gasoline does.
Some people wonder if they should use a steel propane tank or an aluminum propane tank . The answer! It does not matter. Propane is not corrosive and stores equally well in either tank. Where does propane come from you ask! Check out this blog.
HD5 is the highest grade of propane available and is even suitable for engine fuel. Cars, pickup trucks, buses and large trucks can be equipped to run on clean burning propane fuel. Companies that claim to sell a higher grade propane than their competitors are miss-informed and should consult with the refineries where they buy their inventory. The only exception would be California where a slightly different mixture is permitted which creates propane that is of a little less quality than HD5 and while this mixture is acceptable for home use, it is not recommended for engine fuel.
